The largest fort in Kerala, built in 1650 A.D., with its own hoard of histories, is situated in Bekal village of Kasargode. The fort is preserved by the Archaeology department and is one of the most important historical tourist destinations in South India. Bekal village also offers a beautiful beach. Bekal fort is a frequent film shooting spot. About 45 kms from the Bekal fort is the MangroveTrail of Malabar, a coastal jungle trail famous for hiking, birding and boating for day trippers.

The place offers refreshment facilities and small restaurants, making it an ideal picnic spot for families.
